In Nov of 2010, I had a normal doctor checkup, and lab tests ran. I was 60 years old at that time. About a week after the tests the doctor office called and informed me that my PSA level was moving up, they wanted me to see a urologist.
In the first week of Jan, 2011, I saw the urologist and he did the DRE exam and another PSA screen. The PSA level doubled again. At that point he scheduled a biopsy. Three days after the biopsy, I was called at work and informed that I had Prostate cancer. The doctor went on to explain that mine was agressive and it was throughout the prostate. I was at Stage T1C. He also set appt for treatment options the following week.
In the first week of Feb, 2011, I had the Da Vinci Robotic Surgery. The final pathology report came back at Stage T2C and my gleason score of 7. The was PNI, prenural invasion present. I had no symptoms that was indicating any medical problems except that I was real tired.
In Jan of 2011 my wife and I did a complete diet change - we started to research diets in depth.
My diet before cancer was the normal western diet, red meat, pizza, fast foods, Soda, dairy, Ice cream, Processed foods. A lot of desserts! My wife used to make killer brownies. We ate whatever looked good. In Jan of 2011 all of the above stopped and we started to switch to an vegetarian/ anti-oxident diet. I do eat some chicken, skinless white meat and Salmon. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so the sea-food is good here. We both shop organic as much as possible.
My meals nowadays is mainly vegetarian, and combined with a lot of herbs and spices. I consume a lot of fresh garlic. There is no more junk food or snacks. I follow the heart-healthy diet. Now, it is hard to follow and takes effort. But it is paying off. I have been doing this for about 20 months now. My doctor check-ups and lab work look real good.
I just had another complete work up thru the VA and this came back good.
The diagnosis of cancer was a real life changing event for me and was a wake up call. Cancer takes control away from you. The only area that you can control is diet, so why not do some thing that is good for yourself.
A proper diet during this time is very important. There are many studies out there that support proper diet. At this point in time, I am still working, but looking to retire. I now take things a day at a time. I try and stay away from negative things. I keep up on doctor visits. My cycle has been about every 8 weeks to the doctor's for checkups.
The picture above that you see is a dog that my wife got me when I was diagnosed. She wanted me to have company during recovery from surgery. This dog has been a constant companion for both of us. She is a French bulldog and likes to spend hours sleeping next to me in my easy chair. We raised her from a pup during this time.
I feel that the message needs to get out about proper diet. We need to stop killing ourselves. All you need to do is look at the books Forks Over Knives, The China Study and the Film Supersize Me. This says volumes.
